On 30 August 2008, Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Bill Farmer officially opened the Australian Education Centre’s Advance Your Career Postgraduate Workshop at the Four Seasons Hotel in Jakarta, which was attended by about 500 young Indonesian professionals and fresh graduates.
The majority of participants at the workshop, were young professionals aged between 25-35 who, in the early stages of their careers, were interested to gain an insight into the skills, postgraduate degrees and personal attributes required for a career in some of Indonesia’s leading industries.
Australian and Indonesian experts, including renowned public figure Wimar Witoelar, discussed career options in industries such as branding and advertising, information technology, communication, design, engineering, film and television and financial planning. The seven Australian universities contributing to the workshop were CurtinUniversity, DeakinUniversity, MonashUniversity, SwinburneUniversity, The University of Adelaide, The University of Queensland and The University of Technology, Sydney.
There were sessions delivered by Indonesian human resources experts, who are also Australian alumni, Junius Rumindei (JCI Executive Search International) and Eddy Tjahja (Auditsi Executive Search) on the importance of ‘soft’ skills, such as teamwork and communication, and employability in Indonesia’s work force. In welcoming participants to the event, Bill Farmer said, “Australia is a great place for people to explore postgraduate opportunities and acquire the soft skills required to advance their careers. The country offers not only excellent quality of education but also a great life style.”
